Where it all began

So, now you know the dark web and its bad side. The new question is, why create such a thing at all?
I will try to tell you the reason behind why such a thing was needed and who created it.

Okay, so as you all know, every activity you do on the internet is traceable, and in most of the cases will be traced.

Now, in mid 1990s, as the internet was rapidly growing day by day, many people were concerned about their privacy. Many groups of people, agencies, and governments were worried about the traceability of the internet.

The United States Federal government too shared the concern, and decided to act on it. So, the computer experts working for US navy started working on a new technology called Onion routing.

Onion routing was designed in such a way that the communication would be anonymous and the origin and end cannot be detected.

Tor was successfully created and gave complete anonymity to the user, thus doing its job perfectly.

Now, why be so generous and release this technology for the general public? Well, not generous, its genius!

Imagine the Tor (The Onion Router) was only used by the US government. Now whenever a connection comes from Tor, the person from the other end knows that this is the US government, as only they have the access to Tor!

After some failed attempts to overcome this, they decided to release this to the public. They had realized that for their network to be truly anonymous, it had to be open for everyone. They succeeded, and today Tor has millions of active users worldwide.

Now, Tor can be used for almost anything. From browsing the surface to using illegal hidden services.

Even legal websites exist on the dark web. Even Facebook has a dark web version of their website! So, accessing the dark web is in no way illegal. However, using illegal services or websites is a crime (that sadly cannot be punished!).

The hidden services and websites that we talked a bit about in my previous blog, have a special link. This link will not be accessible through normal browsers. The hidden websites always end in .onion just like .com for the surface internet.

I have tried to explain the origin of the dark web, and hope you were satisfied by my explanation. If you have any more quarries, comment them and I will surely answer them.

Thanks for your time!
